Our Tastes of 2018 wine-paired dinners will focus on the exciting wines of 21 independent, trail-blazing winemakers. These men and women are not swayed by fashion but by an abiding passion for their vocation and the alchemy they conjure in their cellars.  The Vineyard’s Tastes of 2018 paired dinners give our chefs free rein to branch away from the hotel’s usual menu and create exciting dishes designed to showcase their talents and complement the wines served.

Any “Friend of the Vineyard” that has attended the “pretasting” for a wine-paired dinner will attest to the collaboration and creativity with which the menus are put together. The winemaker’s range is tasted alongside morsels and ingredients and the most exciting combinations discovered and discussed. The ingredients are then woven by the chefs into delicious dishes that stand proud on their own and bring out intriguing nuances in the wines they are paired with.


The wines to be showcased this year are exciting expressions of the creativity and hard work of the men and women who make them, usually in limited quantities, always with extreme attention to detail, from the choosing of the grapes to the vinification.

The list reads like a CV of South Africa’s most exciting, energetic and visionary winemakers. They have worked vineyards in Russia, New Zealand, Spain, Australia, France and the US but their feet are firmly rooted in the soil of South Africa’s winelands. All have other interests (some are surfers, some musicians, one is a landscape architect, another is a chef), but their fascination is focused on the alchemy that expresses the terroir of very special South African grape parcels.

If there is an overarching philosophy, it is one of restraint. Many of these wines are fermented naturally and bottled with minimal sulphur and filtration
